About This Show

Black theater pioneer Gus Edwards’s evocative two-character play charts the relationship of a mismatched, middle-aged couple that never seem to realize just how mismatched they are. Louie and Ophelia meet in a Bronx bar and, despite the battle scars of previous relationships, end up living together. They’ve both been around the block and then some — but they just can’t pass up another chance at love, despite their battle of wills. Poignant, candid, funny, and real, Louie and Ophelia has captivated audiences around the country since its debut by the Negro Ensemble Company in 1986.
