New York City
M & M Productions with YCP TheaterWorks present a free performance of Emily Dickinson: Feathers Sometimes Soar on the Breath of God, a delightful play about the poet. The play is preceded by a short reading of a few of Dickinson’s poems, to set the mood. Also, Emily’s actual recipe for sweet black cake is served up before the play!
In her own lifetime, Emily Dickinson was a completely unknown poet. Anxious for recognition, she sent samples of her poetry to an editor and man of letters named Thomas Wentworth Higginson, whom she believed would help her achieve success. Years of correspondence followed, culminating in a meeting between the two on August 16th, 1870. Whatever happened during that meeting, no one knows. What is known is that Emily Dickinson never attempted to publish her poetry again. The show is directed by Melinda O’Brien with Daphne Platt portraying Emily Dickinson and Sean Keohane as Higginson.
