About this show

Possessing one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz, Pharoah Sanders is harmonically rich and heavy with overtones. Highly regarded to the point of reverence by many jazz fans, Sanders has made a name for himself with his expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in the Coltrane ensembles of the mid-'60s, and continued to collaborate with other legends such as Sun Ra, Don Cherry and John Hicks. In the decades after his first recordings with Coltrane, Sanders developed the capability of playing convincingly in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream, and as a mature artist he is guided by more graceful concerns, and has discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has maintained his high ranking status in jazz history.
