About this show

Gala Performance: Esplanade, Three Dubious Memories*, Oh, You Kid! Esplanade With pedestrian movement, the dance displays the exuberance of youth, the sadness of a dysfunctional family, and the romantic interplay of lovers. "Confers a mythic dimension on ordinary aspects of our daily lives - unfaked folk art. The dancers, crashing wave upon wave into those falls, have a happy insane spirit that recalls a unique moment in American life - the time we did the school play or we were ready to drown at a swimming meet. The last time most of us were happy in that way." - The New Yorker Mr. Taylor's newest dance is Three Dubious Memories, with music by Peter Elyakim Taussig. From decidedly subjective points of view, the protagonists in a love triangle recall their affair, with its triumphs and defeats, differently -- leaving us, and them, to wonder what really transpired. The dance will have its New York Premiere on February 22, 2011. Oh, You Kid! Set in the early 1900s, the work is evocative of a Coney Island-style revue featuring Vaudeville numbers and a melodrama and set to Ragtime medleys of patriotic and operatic tunes as well as Tin Pan Alley hits. In a poignant solo, a not-so-young "eccentric dancer" performs a hootchy-kootch number for what must be the millionth time, but despite the dearth of applause she gamely goes back on stage to finish. "An exuberant romp... But Taylor reminds us that the era of the Keystone Kops was also the heydey of the KKK... One wants to both laugh and cry." - New York Times
