Orfeo is presented as part of the New Island Festival on Governor's Island. Ancient Greek tragedy, modern improvised music, and a sumptuous Mediterranean dinner. Though founded only a few years ago, DE VEENFABRIEK has already won wide recognition for innovative music theatre. Under the direction of Paul Koek, they create work at the intersections of the worlds of music, fine art, theatre and science. Sometimes staging their work in traditional theatres and other times setting it in more unexpected venues such as airport hangars, hospitals and department stores, Veenfabriekis constantly reinventing performance. Veenfabriek's latest work, Orfeo, is constructed around the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Unsing Monteverdi's Orfeo as a jumping off point, widely acclaimed actor-singer Jeoren Williams and improvisation ensemble Track celebrate the myth's musical tradition. To fill out the evening, Andre Amaro prepares a delicious dinner with the freshest Mediterranean ingredients.
