Unveiled & Warning Signs

Many people never quite see what’s going on elsewhere in the world or even in their own backyard. Michele Cuomo and Maggie Surovell explore this problem of not always being able to see the forest for the trees in two solo works playing in rep at the Seventh Annual Midtown International Theatre Festival.

Unveiled chronicles Cuomo’s research for a production of Phaedra she directed, and her futile attempts to costume it the way she would have liked (she wanted to use a burqua as a mask worn by the title character, to empathize the repression of women and the denial of their rights in the Muslim world). However, so intent are some of those involved in the production they can’t see beyond the stage; as powerfully brought home in this non-linear, tragi-comical look at one person’s attempt to explore specific woman’s issues through presentation of a Greek tragedy, only to find out that it’s more complicated than originally imagined.

In Warning Signs, Surovell presents the story of a Jewish/Vegetarian/Feminist – with big hair and a whole lot of attitude. Raised by left-leaning, progressive parents, she finds herself at a cross-road time and again as she tries to practice what they’ve preached only to have it come up against the harshness of reality both in politics and society in general. An original, humorous, coming-of-age story, Maggie makes discoveries which will surprise and delight the audience, as well as make them think. Featuring a guest appearance by one G.W. Bush!
