Another Urban Riff moves their interactive cult hit to their newly renovated space! In a typical bar area, the audience serves as customers and eavesdroppers, listening in on the one-sided conversations of an eclectic tapestry of bar denizens who join them: a nerd in leather pants, a mute, a rehab dropout, an Urbanologist, an ex-manager who bootlegged his former band’s CD before it was released, and a gallant sock puppet. 13 actors of various cultures and ethnic backgrounds rotate their parts on a weekly basis. In a play where the audience is encouraged to “turn on their cell phones,” distractions are built-in and the audience must keep pace with the action that encircles them like the looped beats on a soundtrack. Mono, written and directed by Steven Tanenbaum, is a Time Out and Paper critics pick, was a spotlight show on The Today Show, and is highly recommended by High 5.
