About the Show

Bronx Academy of Art & Dance presents BAAD! Ass Women 2004, a cultural celebration for Women’s History Month. The festival will include an art exhibit, a film screening, and twelve evenings of theater and dance.

MAGDALENA GOMEZ, LENELLE N. MOISE and CARMEN MURGUIA

Award-winning playwright and poet Magdalena Gomez will deliver a poetic performance full of fuerza and brimming with insightful words that will stay with you long after she has uttered them. Lenelle N. Moise spins manifestos for the right now revolution, mixing a brew full of womanist Vodou jazz, queer theory hip-hop and improvisational modern dance. Carmen Murguia, the Milwaukee Activist Chicana Poet returns to BAAD! with her brazen powerful prose. Your soul will be well fed.

PETRONELIA: HER BROADWAY CHO’

“There’s no business, like ‘cho business” when BAAD!’s resident actress/comedienne/ drag king Elizabeth Marrero presents a new show where she takes some of her beloved characters (and some new ones) to Broadway.

FREE WOMEN ONLY SCREENING OF REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES

Get your favorite girlfriend and share this special women only free screening of the motion picture “Real Women Have Curves,” adapted from Josefina Lopez’s popular play and directed by Patricia Cardoso. This hit film is about a young woman faced with succumbing or challenging her culturally and socially determined role when she is faced with leaving the family and the dress shop where they work to go to college in New York.

SQUIRT!, JUANAJANE and CARMELITA TROPICANA-THE PRETTY LATINA

A set of theatrical performances by women who have something to say. Marisa Sullivan’s SQUIRT! is a series of monologues exploring the public and private politics of female ejaculation. Jane Gabriels’ JuanaJane links her melodic voice, movement prowess and on beat humor in a daring new performance piece. La Downtown Diva, Carmelita Tropicana brings her luscious wit and piercing cultural insight to the Bronx with The Good, The BAAD! and the Pretty Latina.

BAAD! ASS Dancers

One of the highlights of the festival is this special evening of female choreographers sharing an evening of solo and group works that pulse with passion and shimmer with sheer strength. With Leeza Ahmady, Melinda Allen, Alexandra Beller, Keila Cordova, Afua Hall, Shizu Homma, Catherine Hourihan, Jule Jo Ramirez, Rebecca Wender, Alexandra Shilling and Zan.

BARE SOLES

YaYa, the all female Afro-Caribbean music group, teams up with We Got Issues: The Next Wave of Women in Power to present a soul-bearing event. For the first half of the evening the audience will be treated to hand massages and a smooth environment while they bare their souls about issues affecting everyone. Then the audience can kick off their shoes and bare their soles for a tambor pounding performance by YaYa.

WOMAN/MUJER

This celebration of the deep well of the fortitude of women is presented by dancer/choreographer Pepper’s Contemporary Ballet Theatre. Using pop music by Alanis Morrissette, Alicia Keys, classical composer Debussy and “Work It” Missy Elliot, the company presents a full evening with two works titled Pains and A Woman’s Worth

OHMen

Perennial BAAD! ASS WOMAN, Rhina Valentín collaborates with Awilda Sterling-Duprey to present en electrical flow of dance movements with live Palo music by the celebrated Dominican-Haitian group Palo Monte. The story tells of the two women’s journey into the mysticism of life revealing the source of self-limiting belief that robs joy and creates needless suffering. Every movement gives birth to a powerful code of conduct, that can transform life to new experiences of freedom, true happiness and LOVE.

NUYORICAN RULE’S FUNNY WOMEN

For the first time, Marilyn Torres, Selenis Leyva, Jeanette Plaza and Hunts Point’s own Marlyn Matias from the famed and popular comedy troupe Nuyorican Rule will come together to present an evening of comedy skits, satirical insights and BAAD! ASS COMEDY.

hattie gossett, STORME WEBBER and BAAD! ASS Poets

The regal poet and performer hattie gossett was crowned a “Diva deluxe…intellectual godmother of rap artists” by the Village Voice. To witness her perform is to see the height of elegance, bravura and simply no bullshit. Her book “presenting sister noblues” (Firebrand Books www.amazon.com) has been in print since 1988. Storme Webber’s commanding and stirring presence shines through her soulful words and spellbinding voice. Storme will deliver bluesy laced lyrical performance guaranteed to move in to your memory. They’ll be joined by additional BAAD! ASS poets.

FEMM NAMELESS, ROKAFELLA AND STEPHANIE HILLIARD

The festival closes with Femm Nameless, the Afro One World Beat all-woman band. “We are the woman you walk by every day on the street…. We stand for empowerment and unification through music and Afro booty shaking.” The evening will also include the Stephanie Hilliard making her BAAD! singing debut, and Hip-Hop dancer Rokafella singing danceable, “boppable” and heart-stoppable original tunes. (Program to be confirmed). Performance includes free buffet and closing party. – $15
