About This Show

Written in 1798, William Dunlap’s André is the first play to utilize as its subject a native American event — a spying incident growing out of the War of Independence. This verse drama is a strong statement to the world and to posterity that there is no cost too great for defending this new nation. Human life, affection, and sentiment all must be sacrificed to the ideals of the Revolution and the protection of the great new experiment in liberty. William Dunlap, Father of the American Drama, weaves a fresh, complex, and passionate story.

Part of the Pearl Theatre’s summer event, America: The Reading Series.
