Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman is a contemporary retelling of Ovid's classic tales -- a contemplation of love, transformation, and the inevitability of change. Directed by Bessie award-winning director, choreographer, and visual artist Zach Morris, the Abrons Art Center's Urban Youth Theater production embodies these ideas through a fluid integration of dance and theater. The ensemble shifts seamlessly between spoken word and movement as well as from role to role, portraying heroes, fools, ill-fated lovers, and an entire pantheon of gods. Mythic images, themes, and symbols permeate the production's design (created by Morris in collaboration with Kryssy Wright), including art installation elements that themselves metamorphosize throughout the course of the play. The production offers an accessible and engaging way for audiences to re-examine and connect to classic myths.
