About this show

Influenced by the hard bop sounds of Clifford Brown and Lee Morgan, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard burst onto the scene in the 1960's as a sideman on some of the most important albums from that era, including, Oliver Nelson's "Blues and the Abstract Truth," Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch," Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" and Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil" as well as classic recordings by Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and John Coltrane. Hubbard soon became an influential band leader and composer, achieving popular success with a series of 1970's albums for CTI Records including "Red Clay," "First Light," "Straight Life" and "Sky Dive." Hubbard's distinctive trumpet sound has also influenced countless up and coming trumpeters. Two years after Hubbard's passing this all-star celebration of his music features the premiere jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton along with veteran Hubbard associates and band members, tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson, pianist George Cables, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Lenny White.
