Extended! Additional performances Sunday, September 21 at 3pm & 8pm

The idea of Cabaret song can conjure up images of early 20th century Berlin, night clubs, lusty music, singers, and lyrics, smoke-filled rooms, and influences ranging from Kurt Weill to the famous Cabaret of Broadway and film, celebrated so well in Bob Fosse’s work. For composer William Bolcom, these are points of origin to which he adds his own distinctly American ingredients — the interweaving of rag, blues, jazz and gospel influences, to name a few.

Volumes one and two of Bolcom’s Cabaret Songs, published in 1978, contain thirteen songs, including those exploring cabaret life (“He Tipped the Waiter,” “The Actor,” “Over the Piano”) and those examining more mundane, but in many aspects more human concerns (“Toothbrush Time”) and expressionistic fervor (“Surprise”). Volumes three and four are darker, and offer humorous, wistful and bittersweet views of life and love (“Love in the Thirties,” “Can’t Sleep,” “At the Last Lousy Moments of Love”). In addition to the complete Cabaret Songs (Books 1 – 4), Bolcom & Morris will also be performing his Ancient Cabaret Songs, which utilize ancient Greek and Latin text adapted by Mr. Weinstein.

Appropriate for children 7 and up.
