About This Show

Join us for a very special evening of experimental free jazz led by Chicago ex-pat, New Orleans-based musician James Singleton with an ensemble of both his New Orleans and Chicago compatriots, as tonight is an official concert of the 2022 Instigation Festival

New Orleans is a city steeped in tradition, but a big part of this culture is constant evolution via improvisation and innovation. That may be why James Singleton is one of the busiest bassists in town. He’s been a mainstay of the scene for over four decades by playing a myriad of styles with tons of music legends: John Scofield, Ellis Marsalis, Stanton Moore, Chet Baker, and John Medeski, just to name a few. Beyond a standard sideman, Singleton is an accomplished composer and improviser that continues to hone in on his sound by experimentation.

Singleton is perhaps best known as a founding member of the seminal New Orleans modern jazz group Astral Project, as well as more recent experimental outfit Nolatet with vibraphonist Mike Dillon, pianist Brian Haas and Astral Project drummer Johnny Vidacovich.

Tonight, he presents a collaboration with some visiting midwest players, hand-picked by Singleton from the cutting edge of Chicago's free-jazz scene, featuring
James Singleton – bass, trumpet, efx
Charles Rumback – drums
Jim Baker – piano
Dave Rempis – saxophones

ABOUT THE INSTIGATION FESTIVAL
The Instigation Festival brings Chicago & New Orleans music, movement and visual artists together for a week of improvised and interesting interdisciplinary collaboration in each city. Since its’ founding in 2016 by guitarist Steve Marquette and movement artist Marie Casimir, they have presented over seventy artists at twenty venues across seven festivals. Now entering its’ seventh year, the Instigation Festival continues its’ work of fostering connections between these cities’ creative arts communities, while expanding the scope to include European performers. The 2022 festivals will be held February 7th-11th in New Orleans and September 8th-11th in Chicago.
