About This Show

A new translation of Sophocles’ Antigone by Seamus Heaney, The Burial at Thebes is presented by The Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, and Directed by Lucy Pitman-Wallace.In his 1995 Nobel lecture, the Northern Irish poet and translator Seamus Heaney spoke of poetry’s power “to persuade that vulnerable part of our consciousness of its rightness.” In Antigone (literally, “one of the opposite opinion”) Heaney has an ideal subject, an aristocratic woman commanded in time of war to choose political over persoanly loyalty or pay the ultimate price. The acclaimed Nottingham Playhouse production of Heaney’s muscular new translation is a cadenced, plain-spoken drama “Sophocles himself would have recognized” (The Guardian).
