About This Show

Yale Repertory Theatre presents the East Coast premiere of Safe in Hell, a new comedy by Amy Freed, directed by Mark Wing-Davey.

It’s 1691, and Salem has a problem. So the town turns to the most powerful clergyman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Reverend Increase Mather, for help. But when a bad back prevents him from presiding over the Witch Trials, he sends his son Cotton to defend the colonists from the subtleties of Hell. Burning to prove himself worthy of the family name, Cotton marches in to battle, only to discover that the Devil wears many disguises. Amy Freed’s contemporary satire casts a refreshing light on a dark era in American history, when famous sons strove for power and fundamentalism was a part of everyday life.
