About This Show

The legend of Saint Joan of Arc has been told through the ages from conflicting viewpoints, with portrayals ranging from religious zealot to martyred hero. In Telephone Joan, Penelope Freeh examines the curious ways in which “heroes” are defined in modern cultures, specifically in the context of gender. Freeh’s reimagining takes an abstract, nonlinear approach, with the legend acting as the structural canopy and a cast of dancers representing St. Joan in both body and spirit.
