New York City
In Moon Over Buffalo, author Ken Ludwig leads audiences on a headlong romp through the backstage brouhahas of a down-at-heels traveling repertory company.
George and Charlotte Hay lead their troupe into Buffalo in 1953, on the wrong side of fame and fortune – with their professional, romantic, and family affairs all in disarray. In a manic mixture of mistaken identity and miscommunication, the various intrigues unravel at the same time – George’s dalliance with the company’s ingénue, the sparks between Charlotte and their theatrical agent, the daughter’s wavering commitment to both the family business and to her clueless weathercaster of a fiancé.
The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be director Frank Capra’s immediate and unexpected need for replacement players for a film already in production in town, and his expected arrival at a matinee performance. Can the company turn this glimmer of hope into the headlights of an onrushing train? Will anyone – will art itself – survive the alcoholic and antic amalgam of “Cyrano” and “Private Lives” that the company presents on a bungled bill in anticipation of their big break?
Moon Over Buffalo is a tour-de-farce, presenting every actor’s every nightmare in a door-slamming, prat-falling production.
