About This Show

The Rose of the Rancho — adapted from David Belasco’s 1906 melodrama — is the story of Juanita Castro-Kenton, the beautiful young lady, half Mexican, half “gringo,” of the Castro Kenton Rancho in San Juan Bautista. The year is 1857. The United States has ended its war with Mexico, gold has been discovered in California, and the former Mexican territory has now become a new state. “Gringo” vigilantes roam the countryside seizing Spanish-owned property that hasn’t been registered under the new law. Government agent Bob Kearney appears to warn Senora Castro Kenton to register in Monterey before the villain, Kinkaid, and his men can seize her rancho, but she refuses. He falls in love with the beautiful Juanita who must decide whether to trust his advice and give him the deed or remain true to her Spanish traditions.
