About This Show

A play about baseball, America at the start of the 20th century, and legacy and legends, Rube! follows the volatile career of Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell, blessed with enormous gifts on the field, but lacking the mental stability to fit in with the rest of the world off the field. Blending fact and fiction, the play revolves around the efforts of legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice who, more than a decade after Rube’s exile from the game and death, believes enough time has passed to allow him to interview those who knew Rube and separate truth from tall stories. But the more he reports, the more the tales grow larger.
Though baseball is at the heart of the play, playwright Joel Beers knew it was impossible to tell Rube’s story without setting it against the social agitation of the early 20th century, including women’s demands for voting rights, segregation, immigration, and economic uncertainty.

The play is suitable for everyone over the age of 12.
