After opening to rave reviews Off-Broadway in New York City, MATT & BEN, the new comedy written by and starring Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers is moving to Los Angeles.
MATT & BEN took the prize for “Best Overall Production” during its sold-out run at the New York International Fringe Festival and was the only play invited to appear at the HBO sponsored U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. Last summer, MATT & BEN took the Off-Broadway New York theatre scene by storm receiving rave reviews and it continues to play to sold-out houses at the East Village’s P.S. 122. Now, the original production, which Newsweek Magazine has called “The Hottest Play in New York,” is coming to Los Angeles for a limited six-week engagement.
In Matt & Ben, Kaling and Withers portray Matt (Damon) and Ben (Affleck) before J-Lo, before Gwyneth, before “Project Greenlight,” before Oscar — before anyone actually gave a damn. When the screenplay for Good Will Hunting drops mysteriously from the heavens, the boys realize they’re being tested by a Higher Power.
MATT & BEN is directed by David Warren (Barbara’s Wedding, Pterodactyls) with a scenic design by James Youmans (Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Jeffrey, The Food Chain), lighting design by Jeff Croiter (Barbara’s Wedding, Passion Play) and sound design by Fitz Patton (As Long As We Both Shall Laugh, Hobson’s Choice).
