About This Show

Best of Fringe in Toronto and New York City, it’s MAHMOUD, a one-woman show about an aging Iranian engineer-cum-taxi driver, a fabulously gay Spaniard, and a young Iranian-Canadian girl, all trying to cope with the day-to-day grind in a big metropolitan city. Iranian born playwright/performer Tara Grammy invites us to laugh, cry and laugh some more as these characters’ stories intertwine, exploring themes of displacement, immigration, home, and culture. Filled with “uproarious laughter!” (Torontosist), at once hilarious, insightful, and irreverent, MAHMOUD takes an exacting look at racism against Middle Eastern immigrants, homophobia within immigrant communities, and media-created stigmas surrounding Iranian (and Middle Eastern) culture. Hailed by NOW Magazine as an “outstanding production,” MAHMOUD features the work of award-winning director and co-writer Tom Arthur Davis and the internationally acclaimed Soheil Parsa as consulting director. The show is produced by Michelle Grant and Shadan Saber (Tour Manager), with sound design by Mike Conley, lighting design by Jenna Koenig and Linn Øyen Farley. Omar Hady is assistant director. Production stage manager is Jenna Koenig. Theatremania says MAHMOUD “packs a powerful punch!” Come see for yourself. A Guest Production at Santa Monica Playhouse, three weeks only!
