First presented in 1933, and later revived to great acclaim Off-Broadway in 1998, As Thousands Cheer was the hit musical event of the its original season, a revue with an innovative newspaper format that combined Irving Berlin songs with satirical sketches by Moss Hart about the celebrities who romped through the daily headlines.

Targets of Hart’s book include such diverse subjects as Gandhi, Joan Crawford, Josephine Baker and the then new Rockefeller Center. Irving Berlin’s score is unparalleled, launching such favorites as "Easter Parade", "Heat Wave", "Suppertime" and "Harlem On My Mind".
