The Heiress

Set in fashionable New York of the 1850s, Catherine Sloper is the plain daughter of a successful New York doctor. When a handsome but penniless suitor begins to court her, she falls desperately in love with him. Bitter over his own wife’s death, Dr. Sloper forbids the marriage. He cruelly insists that Catherine is not worthy of love and threatens to disinherit her on the pretense that this young man is little more than a fortune hunter. Will Catherine choose love?
