About This Show

Set in Chicago’s South Side during the 1950s, Lorraine Hansberry’s powerful drama A Raisin in the Sun follows the Youngers — a black family struggling to make its dreams a reality during the emerging civil rights movement and the time preceding the March on Washington and the King assassination. When faced with a choice of what to do with a $10,000 insurance settlement, the fabric of their family is torn apart. Mama wants to move out of their tenement in the city into a nice neighborhood. Her daughter Beneatha needs the money for medical school, and her son Walter longs for a business of his own. Though it would take sacrifice, heartbreak and struggle, no dream seemed too impossible.
