The Studio Theatre presents The Gut Girls by Sarah Daniels. The “gutting sheds” of slaughterhouses in turn of the century England were disgusting. However, they employed women, and offered so-called “Gut Girls” the rare opportunity to earn a decent wage in comparison to “being in service” as a domestic in wealthy households. But financial independence, gory work with knives and free evenings to spend in the pubs were not associated with the ideals of Victorian womanhood and the lifestyles of these women contradicted established societal roles. Based on true events, the powerful story of these boisterous and strong-willed women is at times surprisingly funny, and always inspiring.
