Hooded or Being Black for Dummies is an irreverent and darkly comedic examination of two very different 14-year-old black boys growing up in America. Marquis, a book-smart prep-school kid from suburban Maryland, meets Tru, a street savvy Baltimorean when they find themselves sharing a jailhouse holding cell before Marquis's uptight and very white adoptive mother comes to spring them out. Tru thinks Marquis has lost his "blackness" and pens a manual entitled Being Black for Dummies to help him navigate a world of cheerleaders, Black Lives Matter, 2Pac, Nietzsche, and the Gods Apollo & Dionysus — each of whom end up vying for Marquis's future. Colorado favorite, and True West Award winner, Betty Hart, directs this exciting and timely regional premiere.
