About This Show

What do you do when your best friend is the neighborhood bully?

Such is the dilemma facing Braidie, a young girl spotlighted in the play The Shape of a Girl. Braidie knows that “to be a teenager, even to be a little kid, is to often see very hideous behavior from your peers.” For years, Braidie has known that her best friend is inflicting cruel and painful harassment on Sophie, an innocent and ackward classmate. While Braidie sympathizes with Sophie, she does not defend the girl from the vicious attacks. But when the story breaks about a teenager in a nearby city who is murdered by another youth, Braidie begins to re-examine her friend’s antics. Could the same story replay in their town? Could her friend become a killer? And if Braidie just stands by and lets it happen, will she be guilty too?

With wit, honesty and profound insight, Governor General’s Award winning playwright Joan MacLeod pulls us through a tough and complicated teenage world – a world where loyalty to a friend can have tragic results. Presented by the Playhouse Square Arts Education Department.

Please note: Due to the mature themes discussed in this show, The Shape of a Girl is recommended for audience members aged 12 and above.
