About This Show

The Seagull appears in the Goodman Theatre’s new home in Chicago’s North Loop. Regina Taylor sets Chekhov’s tale of alienation and longing in the Gullah Islands off the coast of contemporary South Carolina. At an African-American family gathering, a young performance artist arranges a viewing of his work for his mother, an accomplished but aging actress, and her lover, a celebrated writer. His mother’s mocking comments about his work send the young writer spinning off in a rage, leaving his girlfriend under the spell of the celebrated writer. Working with the heart of Chekhov’s timeless story of the generational split in an artistic family, Taylor brings her own extraordinary voice to this exploration of the nature of success and fame.
