About This Show

Nao d´amores, a company with many years of experience in renaissance theatre, plunges into the passionate world of primitive theatre from a contemporary point of view. Their production of Misterio del Cristo de los Gascones (The Mystery of the Christ of the Gascons) is a recreation of the liturgical ceremony that was performed at San Justo’s church in Segovia, Spain. The Romanic sculpture of Cristo de los Gascones (Christ of the Gascons) was made especially for that ceremony and is one of the most significant pieces of Segovia’s artistic patrimony.
Through a dramaturgy based on historic texts from diverse sources, and along with research into -and live performances of- the music that would have been part of such a ceremony, the resulting production combines live actors with puppets, approximating the likely origins of modern theater. It’s a journey back to the final years of the Middle Ages, through a microcosm based on symbols and allegorical and metaphorical imagery, where each part functions for the whole.
