About This Show

GroundUp Theatre presents author of One Flea Spare Naomi Wallace’s lyrical modern-day folk epic, Slaughter City. Set in a meat packing plant, Slaughter City spans time and space. Borrowing from Upton Sinclair, this work intimately explores the lives of America’s labor class and contemporary issues of sexuality and race with a poet’s tongue and the eye of a documentary filmmaker. Slaughter City follows the journey of Cod, an opportunist, but is this amorphous creature an angel or a demon? With a spare set, allowing the mind’s eye to shape the carnage of their day job, GroundUp leads the audience through this tale of love and redemption with a chorus of women who embody both meat and worker, raising their voices in song, as an ever present force to serve as both witness and narrator. Original music and arrangements of more traditional songs by critically acclaimed composer Peter Waldman.
