About This Show

The first event of its kind in the US, Playing French: Chicago’s First Festival of Contemporary Plays From France features full productions and staged readings (in English translation, unless otherwise noted) presented by Chicago area theater ensembles; a showcase of guest artists and short runs; Q&A’s and receptions with many playwrights and attending French theatre professionals; symposia at Northwestern University and University of Chicago; and a film and documentary series.

“Playing French” was created and coordinated by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in Chicago; the plays are presented by Chicago area theatre companies and guest ensembles. Additionally, “Playing French” is partnering with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Northwestern University, the Alliance Française, the University of Chicago, Facets Multimedia, the Chopin Theatre, the Instituto Cervantes, the Guild Complex, the Chicago Humanities Festival, Chicago Public Schools and many more.
