About This Show
The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre presents the winners of its inaugural 2004 Metropolis New Play Festival. Each winning one-act is given its first public reading by professional actors on the Metropolis mainstage, followed by a talkback with members of the artistic team, moderated by Metropolis’ Literary Manager & Dramaturg Karen Petruska.

January 4: Boxes, by Doug Bedwell; Directed by Lila M. Stromer
Boxes features an intelligent and curious young woman who must choose between two young men. The play examines love, gender, and property rights with humor and sensitivity. An innovative, entertaining look at our ongoing struggle to understand…well…just about everything.
January 11: Half Steps, by Anthony Ruth; Directed by Karl Rutherford
Half Steps offers a deeply perceptive presentation of a young man struggling with the divorce of his parents and the confusion of young adulthood. Ruth’s work has tapped into the modern psyche of Generation Y, making the play’s world so vibrant that it seems as real as our own.
January 18: The Day After Yesterday, by Philip Dawkins; Directed by Mikhael Garver
The Day After Yesterday is ideal for families and anyone who has ever experienced the pain and exhilaration of being in love. This magical and
imaginative play features two young lovers divided by the jealousy of
another young woman, who continue to love despite spending years and miles apart.
January 25: Mrs. Felton’s Moral Lesson, by David J. Eshelman; Directed by James Wm. Joseph
Mrs. Felton’s Moral Lesson closes the festival with a hysterical farce
written with tremendous wit and featuring a cast of larger-than-life
characters. Satirizing Victorian melodrama, Eshelman’s play features Mrs.
Felton, determined to avenge her father’s death with the help of her
sisters.
