New York City
Infamous Commonwealth Theatre presents Cloud 9, by Caryl Churchill. This wild, gender-bending farce compares human relations in British colonial Africa in the 1870s, with London a century later. The characters include Clive, a British functionary, his wife Betty (played by a man), their daughter Victoria (played by a rag doll), Clive’s friend Harry (a bi-sexual explorer), Mrs. Saunders, who runs about dressed in a riding habit, Clive’s son Edward (who still plays with rag dolls and is played by a woman) and Joshua – a black servant played by a white – who knows exactly what is going on. Genevieve Thompson directs.
