Blues for an Alabama Sky

Offering a captivating portrait of the finals days of the Harlem Renaissance and the early days of the Great Depression, Blues for an Alabama Sky tells the story of four close friends and the trials that threaten to break them apart. There’s Angel, a Cotton Club chanteuse who’s just lost her job; Guy, her costume designer roommate who dreams of working with Josephine Baker in Paris; their neighbor Delia, a missionary for Margaret Sanger’s family planning clinic; and Sam, a dedicated Harlem doctor who’s equally dedicated to “letting the good times roll.” Into their midst appears Leland Cunningham, a straight-laced young man from Alabama whose tragic past sparks the drama to come.

The opening performance on Sunday, March 18 begins at 7:00pm and is followed by a reception.

Playwright Pearl Cleage answers questions at a post-show discussion following the Friday, March 23 8:00pm show. The event starts around 10:00pm and is free and open to the public.

A symposium for Pearl Cleage – where she discusses her life and career and answers questions from the audience – is scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at 1:00pm. There is a $10.00 suggested donation for the event, which includes actor readings and presented scenes from Cleage’s works.

Post-show discussions with the cast are scheduled for Sundays March 25, April 1, 8, 15 and 22.
