About this show

Joseph Carey Merrick, better known as the Elephant Man, was born in Leicester, England on August 5, 1852, with horrible physical deformities. He spent the better part of his adult life on exhibit billed as the Elephant Man — "half man, half elephant" — at fairgrounds and small storefront freak shows in London.

Abandoned and robbed of his life savings by his manager, he ended up one day at Liverpool Street Station, where an angry mob had beaten him, only to be rescued by one of London Hospital's most lauded young physicians, Dr. Frederick Treves. Treves would become Merrick's caregiver for life, and the two would form a bond far surpassing friendship that would be forever told in this moving story of survival against overwhelming odds.

Thursday Night Theater Club is proud to present one of the most important plays of the second half of the 20th century, The Elephant Man, a play by Bernard Pomerance, directed by Robyn Cohen at the historic El Portal Theatre.
