About the Show

Okra is a dark comedy set in the French-speaking corner of Louisiana, where a rich brew of Cajun and Creole cultures continues to stir
centuries of simmering resentments, disappointments and legends. The central family is Cajun. For Lillian Bourgeois, the matriarch, this is a matter of pride and importance. Cajuns have a strong relationship to the old world, the France of the 17th century. The arrival of French cousin Henri challenges the status quo. This is just life’s latest blow for Lillian, who already struggles with two daughters who seem to hate her. Claudine and Marie cope with the
excesses of their aging Mother, and with their own issues of personal identity, family heritage and adult freedom. Visiting French cousin Henri and mixed race neighbor Antoine have no choice but to stir the pot. As with all things gumbo, it’s a question of adding the right ingredients at the right time.

Opening Night includes a post-performance party with playwright Anne Galjour & cast, Cajun food, spirits and music.
