TheatrExpresso’s second production, A Match Made in Hell, is a lively, romantic comedy with plenty of subtext and humor. Although set in the present, in a seemingly ordinary Los Angeles law office, it’s reminiscent of the great romantic comedies of the 1940s. The play follows the exploits of widowed criminal defense attorney Morgan Bishop, who uses a brash form of matchmaking as a way to avoid his own romantic needs and as salvation from his daily trials and tribulations. The twist is that, at least in his own mind, Morgan is bedeviled by supernatural pranks perpetrated by a jailed client who calls himself the antichrist. Constance, Morgan’s by-the-book secretary, wants to win Morgan’s affection but can’t seem to compete with his memories of his deceased wife, compulsive matchmaking, and antics to dodge the supernatural assaults. When Morgan tries to fix up his Bible-toting nephew, Wally, with Cyn, a Gothic love cynic, the match ignites a firestorm destined to turn Morgan’s heavenly pastime into a living hell.
