Uncle Tom’s Cabin

The Coyote Theatre presents a new adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe?s classic, re-titled for the stage as Uncle Tom’s Cabin; Or, The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Created by Floraine Kay and Randolph Curtis Rand with the off-Broadway theatre company, the Drama Dept., Boston?s Coyote Theatre presents the New England premiere to mark the novel?s 150 years of controversy.

The production explodes conventions of melodrama and burlesque to portray the novel?s disputed place in the canon of American literature and draws upon many other sources including Nine Inch Nails, Darwin, Woodrow Wilson, James Baldwin, and Oscar Wilde as part of this debate. The essential elements of the book?s well-known narrative are depicted, including the close companionship of a mild-mannered slave named Uncle Tom with a young white child named Little Eva and the flight of Eliza, a quadroon slave, after learning that her child is to be sold.
