About This Show

Critically-acclaimed as Russia’s most innovative contemporary dance company, the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg returns to Boston with the New England premiere of The Seagull.
Artistic Director Boris Eifman’s spectacular new masterpiece sets Anton Chekhov’s tale of passion, artistic conflict and unrequited love to the music of Rachmaninoff.

Chekhov’s The Seagull explores the relationship between a young man and his mother by drawing parallels to the relationship between true art and the appearance of art through conformity. Retaining the main philosophical ideas on art that imbue Chekhov’s work, Eifman moved the action from a country estate to a ballet hall, where the fashionable choreographer Trigorin clashes with the daring innovator Treplev, and the young dancer Zarechnaya competes with prima ballerina Arkadina. The issues of the development of art, the search for new forms, true and deceptive values, love and career are expressed with particular sharpness in Eifman’s choreographic rendition.
