About This Show

This hilarious political satire has been a hit since it premiered in the year 411 BC! In Aristophanes’s version, Athens and Sparta have been at war for years, and there seems to be no end in sight. Fed up with war, Lysistrata unites women in a clever bit of civil disobedience. They withhold bedroom favors from their husbands until the men vote for peace with Sparta. Deprived of these favors, the men become immobilized and can’t fight. Director Kirsten Cairns places the action of Lysistrata during an unnamed war in the United States in the 1950’s.
