About This Show

Birth of a Musical nurtures New England authors through a month-long process of rehearsals, feedback and rewrites, culminating in staged readings open to the general public. Discussions by a panel of theater professionals follow performances at Suffolk University.

The festival features three works in development:

The Lady from Maxim’s – directed by Greg Smucker
Based on the classic French farce by Georges Feydeau, it takes place on “the morning after the morning after” as the previous day’s deceptions and machinations prove increasingly inconvenient.

Public Domain – directed by Janet Morrison
A telemarketer jumps to his death in Park Street Station. Lady Liberty, a pregnant schizophrenic, becomes his companion through the underworld of the subway she calls home.

A Time to be Born – directed by Paul Daigneault
Based on the novel by Dawn Powell, this is a romantic comedy set in 1940 New York. With America on the verge of war, opportunism is in the air. Beautiful celebrity author Amanda has wealth, power and fame thanks to her media mogul husband; however, she risks it all for an affair.

Performances June 27 through 29 are at Suffolk University’s C. Walsh Theatre at 55 Temple Street in Boston.
