Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph the musical Aladdin to run July 7-31 at The Fifth Avenue Theatre. Adapted from Disney’s 1992 animated feature film of the same name, the show is designed for regional theater productions.

The production replaces the previously announced Oklahoma!, which has been postponed until the 2011-2012 season.

Aladdin, inspired by Arabian folktales and the famous One Thousand and One Nights, has a score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book and additional lyrics by Chad Begulin. It tells the story of a resourceful young man who dares to woo a princess with the help of an all-powerful Genie. The production will feature all of the songs from the film’s Oscar-winning score, including “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World,” plus numbers restored from early drafts of the score. Casting will be announced shortly.

On Broadway, Nicholaw directed and choreographed The Drowsy Chaperone and Elf and choreographed Monty Python’s Spamalot. In addition, he will be represented on Broadway this spring with The Book of Mormon.

The creative team will include Anna Louizos (scenic design), Gregg Barnes (costume design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), Glen Kelly (dance arrangements), and Michael Kosarin (musical supervision).
