African-American Shakespeare Company has announced the productions set for its 2011-2012 season, which will run December 2-May 13 at the Buriel Clay Theater in the African American Art & Culture Complex.

Cinderella, an uplifting re-telling of the classic fairytale featuring all of the pageantry, hilarity, and charm of the original but with a soulful twist, will be presented December 2-18 and directed by Executive Director Sherri Young. The season continues March 10-April 1 with Shakespeare’s passionate and intense political thriller Julius Caesar, directed by Michael Gene Sullivan.

Closing the season will be the company’s first world premiere production, playwright and actress Nambi E. Kelley’s Xtigone, April 20-May 13, directed by Darryl Jones. Xtigone is an urban adaptation of Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone and is inspired by the untimely deaths of youths in Kelley’s native Chicago as a result of gang violence.

African-American Shakespeare Company was created to provide an opportunity and a venue for actors of color to hone their skills and talent by mastering some of the world’s greatest classical roles. The company is dedicated to producing classic stage works from an African-American cultural perspective, providing opportunities and accessibility for minority artists and their communities to view these works in a manner that is inclusive of their cultural heritage.
