Beebo Brinker Chronicles, D’Lo’s Ramble-Ations, et al. Set for Brava! for Women in the Arts’ 2009-2010 Season

Brava! for Women in the Arts has announced its 2009-2010. In addition to new productions, Brava will also continue some offerings from past seasons including No Artist Left Behind with an Open House for Artists on September 14, and Art Openings curated by Diane Rea.

SFMOMA, the Italian Cultural Institute, and PERFORMA 09 will team up with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts to present Action! Futurism Projected & Performed, October 18, curated and directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges. The Me, Myself, and I Series, November 18-December 5, will feature new solo works from performance artist D’Lo, and local writers Jeanne Haynes, Rachel Parker, and Anthem Salgado. Girltropolis, November 20, created by The Glass to Diamonds Ensemble, is a youth written work that explores issues of holistic wellness, esteem, sexual violence, and clinic access. The world premiere of Dear Allah, All I Want for Christmas is a Menorah, December 2, will present a collection of plays about the holidays, set in San Francisco during a snow storm in the Mission.

Lorraine Hansberry’s Les Blancs, February 10-March 6, will tackle the struggles of race relations and how to survive the violent forces of colonization with Rajendra Maroon Maharaj at the helm. The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, February 23-March 13, is an adaptation of Ann Bannon’s groundbreaking, award-winning pulp novel by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman with direction by Myrick-Hodges. Ramble-Ations by D’Lo, March 17-April 3, will explore the cultural tensions and synergies that define and affirm us as a nation through her own experiences being gay in a Hindu Sri Lankan family. Darcy Drollinger’s Scalpel, March 30-April 17, is a darkly comedic rock thriller that will dive into two great American obsessions: beauty and conspiracy.

Brava will team up with Precarious Theater Company for The Kitchen Series – Food and Theatre, a staged reading series that mixes wine and food with four works from various playwrights. This year’s series will include The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt (October 12), Drunken City by Adam Bock (March 7), Sgt Casey’s Remains by Lauren Wilson (April 19), and The Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov (June 14). Fou Fou Ha! will close the season in June, an animated performance troupe with costumes resembling a cross between Dr. Seuss, Antique Court Jesters, and fantastic Anime characters.
