The A.C.T. Young Conservatory will present the world premiere of Beautiful Child: The Music of Rufus Wainwright, at Zeum Theater, May 14-29. Domenique Lozano will direct, with musical direction by Jane Hammett, and choreography by Christine Mattison.

Featuring a book written by Craig Slaight, the piece uses the acclaimed singer/songwriter’s melodies and lyrics to tell an original tale. Shamed by his father’s arrest during the Panic of 1893, young New York socialite Josiah Matliff flees to Chicago. As he traverses the American railways, he meets other teenage runaways from the fringes of society who are escaping their own pasts.

The cast will feature Mackenzie Adams, Danielle Bowen, Olivia Brown, Christopher Garber, Simone Hudson, Jenna Johnson, Richardson Jones Colin Ketcham, Adam Maggio, Del Montgomery, Jadyn Petterson-Rae, Haley Reicher, and Katie Yeilding.

The piece is presented in collaboration with Bird School of Music, with the band including Nicholas Perloff-Giles, Charlie Lazarus, Maranda Seney, and Talia Storey-Cuddeback. The design team will include Craig Slaight (scenic designer), Ian Smith (lighting designer), and Jef Valentine (costume designer).
