Anna Deavere Smith will perform her solo play, Let Me Down Easy, at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, running May 28-June 26. Leonard Foglia has directed the production.

Smith’s show is replacing Rita Moreno’s Life Without Makeup, which has been rescheduled to September so that its star can recuperate from knee replacement surgery.

Conceived, written and performed by Smith, Let Me Down Easy explores the health care system and the way our bodies carry us through life. As previously announced, the piece is being videotaped in February during its run at Arena Stage for broadcast on PBS as part of its Great Performances series during the 2011-2012 season.

Smith’s other works include Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 and Fires in the Mirror. She also currently co-stars in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, and is also well known for her previous television work as Nancy McNally on NBC’s The West Wing.
