The Last Match begins its run at Old Globe Theatre tonight.

Russian tennis phenom Sergei Sergeyev and American superstar Tim Porter are pitted against each other in the US Open tennis semifinals. Anxiously observing from the sidelines are Galina and Mallory, the women who share their lives. As the tennis balls fly from one end of the court to the other, the minds of the players and the lives they lead with their significant others are laid bare. Paced at the speed of a professional tennis match, the show explores family, parenthood, and the legacies we leave behind, and much more than a championship is at stake.

Written by Anna Ziegler, the show is directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch. The cast includes real-life fiancés Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario, alongside Alex Mickiewicz and Natalia Payne.

"The Last Match is just a terrific play: funny and smart and suspenseful and populated by vivid and articulate characters with whom it’s a pleasure to spend two hours," said artistic director Barry Edelstein. "It looks at some big American ideas that happen to be very much in the air right now: winning and losing, and the price of fame, and whether or not getting what we want is in fact the key to real happiness. Its use of tennis as a metaphor is both witty and probing, and as it puts center court at center stage, it delivers a real ace of an evening."

The creative team includes Tim Mackabee (set design), Denitsa Bliznakova (costume design), Bradley King (lighting design), Bray Poor (sound design), David Huber (vocal coach), and Diana Moser (stage manager).

Performances will run through March 13.
