The principal cast for the upcoming Avengers movie was officially announced at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 24, according to published reports. Joss Whedon will direct the film, which unites some of the most recognizable superheroes that are published by Marvel Comics.

Following the announcement earlier this month that Edward Norton would not be reprising his movie role as the Hulk in the Avengers film, it has now been confirmed that the role of Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk) will be played by Tony nominee Mark Ruffalo.

Stage veterans with prominent roles also include 2010 Tony Award winner Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth will once again portray Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, which they also play in the recent or forthcoming films starring those characters. Jeremy Renner will play the role of Hawkeye, and Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Shield Agent Phil Coulson, which he will also play in the Thor movie.
