Performances of The Miracle Worker start this evening at Ocean State Theatre Company.

Based on the real-life relationship between Helen Keller and her tutor, Annie Sullivan, the play tells the story of Helen’s early life and experiences with language. Trapped inside a dark and silent world, Helen is unable to communicate with anyone. She’s consequently violent, spoiled, and almost subhuman, and everyone around her treats her as such. It’s only with the arrival of Annie, who is determined to find and free the mind behind the disability, that Helen is given a chance at a real life. Through intensely emotional and physical interactions the lonely teacher and her charge seek to break down boundaries few of us have to consider.

Gibson’s play is directed by producing artistic director Amiee Turner, and the cast features Laurel McMahon as Helen Kller, Brittany Rolfs as Annie Sullivan, Kristin Wetherington as Kate Keller, and Kevin B. McGlynn as Captain Keller. Alongside the four leads are Joseph DePietro, Jennifer Mischley, Staci Morin, Brooke Lee Ann Boisvert, and Jerry Carino.

Performances will run through April 17.
