Cherry Lane Theatre has announced casting for its first Mentor Project play, The Surgeon and Her Daughters, written by Christopher Gabriel Núñez. Performances will run from February 24-March 5.

This year marks the 18th season of Cherry Lane's Mentor Project, which annually pairs new playwrights with seasoned writers for play development, casting, rehearsals, and a fully staged production. Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Animals Out of Paper), who mentors Núñez for this production, is a veteran of the program, having been mentored by Theresa Rebeck in 2005 for his play Huck and Holden.

Directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt, The Surgeon and Her Daughters features David Anzuelo (Se Llama Cristina), Rosa Arredondo (Elementary), Russell G. Jones (Ruined), Elizabeth Ramos (A Month in the Country), Diana Oh (Chimerica), and Eden Marryshow (Blue Bloods).

The story is described as follows: "Who is Amon El-Hashem? When no one is who they seem to be and fear is the enemy of the truth, can two daughters struggling to cope with the abrupt deployment of their mother on a dangerous overseas mission trust a seemingly kind-hearted stranger who suddenly enters their lives and tries to make their family whole again?"

The creative team includes scenic design by Raul Abrego, costume design by Sueann Leung, lighting design by Grant Yaeger, sound design by M.L. Dogg, and property design by Deborah Gaouette.
